Focus on that Form The third and final instalment of Minimal Violence’s trilogy DESTROY — [physical] REALITY [psychic] — TRUST for Tresor sees the duo metamorphosing into a solo project with Ash Luk remaining to complete the release. Coincidentally and unintentionally, the departure of long time collaborator Lida P. in conjunction with the hormonal and physical changes beginning with Ash in their own journey as a transmasculine artist led to the final and culminating concept of Transformation and Transcendence originally outlined by the duo in the conceptualisation for the three part series. The ideas behind each phase of the trilogy that Minimal Violence had conceptualised before the pandemic (destruction, restructuring and transcendence) unintentionally mirrored what was happening in the world and Luk’s own life. From the beginning of the project in 2019 to today, there has obviously been a major upheaval in the live music scene, with the need to create new ways to work and leading to a stage of transformation. Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, Ash’s essential references come from their mother who worked in a record shop and later as a booker for the main live music venue in the area, the infamous Royal Albert Arms Hotel. Mad Johnny (their step-father), also was an inspiration, he played in metal and industrial bands throughout Ash’s childhood. This emphasis on live music was a foundation for the way in which Minimal Violence began the approach to making music. They would focus on preparing a live set using solely hardware, testing out that set at venue with an audience and recording tracks based on what vibes best with the crowd. As well, recording the tracks live at the venue would bring forth the opportunity for exciting and unexpected moments unique to the Punk and Hardcore DIY ethos. This fresh take on electronic music led Minimal Violence to release their album debut on Ninja Tunes’ sub-label Technicolour. However, following the lockdowns and limited ability to play live shows forced Ash to pivot and re-calibrate. Producing in isolation led to new ways of making music, focusing on sonic quality and structure style in order to be accessible to all listening settings. The first track of the EP ‘Flatline’, best exemplifies this, a collaboration with Luk’s mother co-writing lyrics and their step-father on vocals and guitar. The 145 bpm unflinching assault belies the melodic undertone hidden inside, with lyrics “..nothing matters… I still love you… resuscitation… resurrection” crooning harshly amid Mad Johnny’s guitar riffs. Following track ‘Cold (sex)’ , one remaining relic from the duos pre-pandemic live sets, replaces the melodic synths with distorted whistles and de-tuned melodies, with Luk’s ability to push their hardware on full display. ‘We Suffocate on the Violence of Light’ is a singular moment in Minimal Violence’s particular vein of acid infused euphoric trance. You can feel Luk’s liberation from the relentlessness of performing live, with more time to focus on structure and a particular development in breaks, in tracks like ‘Focus On That Form’. With a tight execution of intense synths and skilled use of hard deep noise soundscapes.
